Snubbed?

As reported in the Spec., Hamilton has not been invited to to the final Pan Am push next week in Mexico, despite the fact that we are a major stakeholder. Hamilton would put up the most money, $60 million, while the city of Toronto is committed to $50 million, which is much less per capita.

Mayor Fred isn't fussed about it and argues that it makes sense to keep consistency by sticking with the same people who have been meeting with the Pan Am delegates.

Councillor Brad Clark begs to differ, adding that he believes that we've been snubbed by a Toronto centric group. See story here

What do you think? Should the Mayor be fussed? Do you agree with Councillor Clark?

  2. Games or no Games, Ivor Wynne is gone.........
I think it is great that win or lose, the city has
decided to build a new stadium. A well thought through
plan for a new 30,000+ seat venue will go a long way if
our respectable Lords and Ladies think carefully about
what an impressive impact this could have upon our
city's image. i.e. Nuit Blanche Revisited
We have until November 11 to be inspired.

Imagine a hybrid open-air fair weather stadium
with an inflatable roof hosting two or three
gatherings per week packed to the rafters.
What a gem this would be lit up at night!
I can almost feel the warm attractive
glow tugging at me from the skyway.

    Cheers to Art in paradise
    Our Rescue Bubble sport!
    LRT is coming along nice
    Prepare IT next to court

Snubbed or not we have a plan
    Black and Golden Ti-Cat's fans
To share the field with one and all
Rockers and wrestlers and soccer balls

We announce to the region with a fiery light
Our electric intent to get back on track
Make our clear focus a Grey Cup fight
Hamilton is with the Cat's attack

Bring us a reason to cheer
    Put our legacy at ease
    Offer us 2 4 1 beer
    And don't forget
    To play please

    Boo!

  3. I don't really agree with WRCU2 in this. Any new stadium is a luxury the city can not afford and it needs to put it's resources to more vital uses. Like roads and sewer issues.

This Pan Am bid has been a bad idea from the start, with the argument being that the Pan Am games will bring visibility and economic benefits to Hamilton. To which I say.. BS!

It's obvious we're being used by a Toronto-centric Pan Am committee where it is convenient to them. They aren't at all concerned about Hamilton receiving any benefit from this, despite their glorified sales-pitch. Happy to take our money for the bid, of course, but "heavens no, couldn't have those Hamiltonians with us when we go to Mexico."

I say 'bah humbug' to the Pan Am games, 'bah humbug' to the wasteful spending, and 'bah humbug' to the mayor for being so weak in this.

  4. It's our tax money at stake, and he doesn't care if we are there or not? We could sure use that money elsewhere, especially iof we don't care enough to make sure we are part of the process.

  5. Anonymous, I feel neither fussed nor snubbed. My team
has done its part to outfit dozens of homes in this
city with flood prevention technology. I also believe
we already have plenty of roads and they're just fine.
The money allocated for the stadium in the games bid,
was not collected through taxes. That money was profit
from dividends earned through excessively high Hydro
bills over the years and is part of a "legacy" fund.
Who would argue that the Cat's, Ivor Wynne Stadium
or the Commonwealth Games are not as much a part
of our legacy as alternating current or steel?

Bah humbug is something normally felt after a flu shot,
though not usually this soon before Christmas. Hopefully
we will all start feeling better in a few more weeks once
    the novelty wears off.
