A Burning Question

Mayoral candidate Michael Baldasaro's answers to the questions posed to him on The Hamiltonian, appear to be generally well received. So, we thought we'd follow up with Michael and ask a question that we believe people would be interested in. Michael was gracious enough to provide an answer. His answer is posted verbatim.

Q.        Your use of marijuana as a sacrament related to your religious beliefs, may invoke pause in the minds of some, and cause them to question whether you would be fit to lead this city.  How do you respond to these concerns? Can you understand how some might have doubts about you as a leader, given your use and advocacy for the use of marijuana? What is your message to those who might think in that way?

My message to those who believe marijuana would interfere with my ability to lead this City is clear:

Because of the persecution I have endured, I have a better understanding of our Justice System and can more adequately protect the Citizens of the G.H.A. from injustice.

Fears over the consumption of Marijuana by the Mayor of the Greater Hamilton Area “G.H.A.”, are unfounded (Reefer Madness).

In the first place, Religious Freedoms are constitutionally guaranteed under Section 2 of the
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1867-2010. The use of marijuana, in religious worship, should invoke no more pause to question one’s ability to lead the G.H.A., than British Columbia gives to their Superior Court Justice or than the University of Toronto gives to their 2 Professors who use it daily. Both the Court and University, in recognition of their medicinal needs, created special smoking rooms for ingesting marijuana, at work during their breaks from the bench and in the classroom.

I have a Prescription from my Doctor, to use marijuana, medicinally, which makes the question to my inability to lead because of my “religious use of marijuana, “moot”. My medicinal use of Marijuana is prescribed to me in compliance with the provisions of the Federal Government’s Civil, Non-Criminal, Health Regulations, under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act.

Citizens should be more concerned if I drank alcohol, (which I don’t), according to The Honourable Mr. Justice McCart, who, in the Superior Court of Justice, Jury Trial, on August 14, 1997, at London, Ontario, in the matter of THE QUEEN vs, CHRISTOPHER CLAY and others, Ruled as follows:

HIS HONOUR: I wish to turn now to some statistical evidence which was introduced by various of the witnesses and which I accept as valid. I heard from a most impressive number of experts, among whom there was a general consensus about effects of the consumption of marijuana. From an analysis of their evidence I am able to reach the following conclusions:

1.
Consumption of marijuana is relatively harmless compared to the  so-called hard drugs and including tobacco and alcohol
2.
There exists no hard evidence demonstrating any irreversible organic or mental damage from the consumption of marijuana;
3.
That cannabis does cause alteration of mental functions and as such, it would not be prudent to drive a car while intoxicated
4.
There is no hard evidence that cannabis consumption induces psychoses;
5.
Cannabis is not an addictive substance
6.
Marijuana is not criminogenic in that there is no evidence of a causal relationship between cannabis use and criminality;
7.
That the consumption of marijuana probably does not lead to "hard drug" use for the vast majority of marijuana consumers, although there appears to be a statistical relationship between the use of marijuana and a variety of other psychoactive drugs;
8.
Marijuana does not make people more aggressive or violent
9.
There have been no recorded deaths from the consumption of marijuana;
10.
There is no evidence that marijuana causes amotivational syndrome
11.
Less than 1% of marijuana consumers are daily users;
12.
Consumption in so-called "de-criminalized states" does not increase out of proportion to states where there is no de-criminalization.
13.
Health related costs of cannabis use are negligible when compared to the costs attributable to tobacco and alcohol consumption

This would save tax dollars!

Be well and prosper.
In peace, bless us all.

Brother Michael James Baldasaro

  1. For thousands of years man has tried to alter his mood and thinking with almost every thing under the sun,it is common place,what is not so common is the use of marijuana over that time period.I have on occasion taken to smoking weed ,but I am not always crazy about the side effects,I do however enjoy the company of weed smokers over drinkers.Drinkers of alcohol seem to be of a poor temper.I really suggest caution when or if a person decides to smoke cigarettes,smoke weed ,drink alcohol,or any other drug ,because in fact they are all drugs,I would and am of the thinking that there are little long term benefits to any of them,and this is from personal experience that I state this.Running for mayor is a serious decision ,and it is important to try and set a example to are youth by not exposing them to these drugs.I am forty seven years old and have been around the block and it is for this reason I am against all promotion and selling of all legal and illegal drugs that have a derogatory effect on long term goals.As your mayoral candidate I refuse to judge other citizens for their choices,I just might not enjoy their company when High,drunk or stoned.

    I am a true anti smoker and has your mayor I will enforce to the limit of the law and past, the right to protect your heath from smokers.
    Smokers are a minority forcing their habit on the majority.I oppose smoking on all city property and will work with staff to produce a strict anti smoking policy.

    Mr. DiFalco and Hamiltonian Staff. I want to thank-you for having the decency to be fair to all of the candidates. I've seen you engage councillors, the mayor and the new faces that are critical to election choices. I think you have set the standard now and are leading by setting a good example of what it really means to be fair. I noticed that your example is rubbing off on other media sources in many ways. Good on you and thank you again for doing what you do. Keep leading. I suspect that our local media outlets are learning from The Hamiltonian.

  4. Do not under estimate Mr. Baldasaro. He is an intellegent educated man. If your basing your vote on the fact that he uses weed, then re think again. How do we know the other candidates don't use, or drink? Same thing. There just not open about it.

  5. This is the first time I have actually got to know Mr. Baldasaro. Every time I read about him, they call him names because of marijuana. It's great that he is getting attention and a fair shake. If you want to talk to your councilor, some of them can be found at the Honest lawyer before council meetings. Maybe Baldasaro can do better than the current and former Mayor. Hard to imagine he could do worse than either of them, isn;t it

  6. given these facts, why is it still acceptable to treat pot users like criminals and nincompoops? The Reefer Madness has been debunked, even IF more than half the population doesn't know that.

    It is the media's fault. They give lots of copy space to cops and politicians who disparage pot users, but we don;t see many articles about the fact that pot kills cancer, the US government knew in 1974 and secured a patent ON the cancer-fighting properties of pot.

  7. NOTE: Although it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle while intoxicated, there is no evidence that marijuana is intoxicating, unlike alcohol, in which cases people fall off chairs and can't even walk.

    According to a University of Toronto study, researcher Alison Smiley suggests, "Getting high on marijuana doesn’t hinder the ability to drive nearly as much as drinking alcohol. http://www.iamm.com/driving-study.htm

  8. well, honestly? personally i''d rather have someone that just used marijuana than someone elected based on religious beliefs. i'm a frizbitarian.

  9. I would vote for Michael based upon his honest character.
    I wonder if his ability to lead would come into question if he was prescribed a substance made by Big Pharma and his Theological belief was only based on a book and a cross

  11. I remember when I used to work on Wentworth Street North many years ago, seeing Michael walking those streets. I knew who he was, but I did not 'know' him.

    I probably did not take him seriously then, but I have had the chance to meet and get to know him through this stadium debate, and I now have a lot of respect for the way he cares about the people in this community.

    Color, religion, sexual preference, or whether a person prefers smoking pot over drinking alcohol, have no revelance in the decision at hand.

    If everyone that made his or her way to council had a heart like brother Michael, what a great city we would live in.

    As others have said, I applaud The Hamiltonian for it's unbiased coverage of the news in our city. Other media outlets could learn a great deal from the example being led here.

    Kudos and good luck to all candidates.

  12. I do not like to deal in the lessor of the two evils.. why not no evils..
    There are studies done people who smoke only marijuana, and have found the impact of smoking marijuana on the lungs.. just as bad.. as cigarettes..
    If God meant us to smoke he would have put a smoke stack on our heads..

    ReplyDelete
  13. The affects of long term marijuana use are still being looked into. Our grandparents were not really into smokin'reefer. There are studies that have found high evidence of damage to the lungs and these are people who smoke marijuana only!!
    It has been known to be a gateway drug, because the high dosen't give the kick it once used too.
    Of course alcohol is the worst, but its long term affects: financially, emotionally and spiritually, are much more obvious than the long terms of smoking pot..
    As far a sacrament..making a living off distribution of it, is in my view not very sacred..

  14. For sure, reading this article and his interview, I'm looking at Mr. Baldasaro differently. All these years I have been led to believe that he is just a pot head. He's actually got some very good views. Thanks for giving him a chance.

  15. Michael Baldasaro is a true believer in Hamilton and a staunch supporter of Hamilton's heritage. As the Hamiltonian points out, he was gracious enough to provide an answer to a question that pre-supposed (the idea) that the use and advocacy of cannabis provided legitimate grounds for doubts about his candidacy; in my opinion, it does not.

    The legitimacy of cannabis as a sacrament related to religious beliefs, although unorthodox to conventional/fundamentalist thinking, is both an authenticated, legitimate and a sincere practice. However, even though Michael Baldarsaro's medicinal usance renders the issue (of religious belief) a “moot” point that does not alter the fact that it should be in no way to used as a point of contention to disqualify Michael Baldasaro based on stereotypical misrepresentations of himself or the Assembly of the Church of the Universe.

    Michael Baldasaro's election platform is based on the slogan “Together we shall” and when he says “I will listen and respond to you” I believe as Mayor he would do precisely that. Because of his understanding of local heavy industries and experience pertaining to matters concerning, road, sidewalk, water main, storm and sanitary sewer construction, repair and maintenance, Michael Baldasaro is the most qualified to understand not only the needs of the City's infrastructure but what needs should be prioritized.

    On October 25th Vote Baldasaro For Mayor!

  16. Reverend Baldasaro's use of marijuana is only sidetracking our attention to his message as Mayoral candidate. Because of our own issues with marijuana (for or against) we miss his most salient points about the health of Hamilton as a community.
    One thing you have to give Rev. Baldasaro credit for is his tenacity yet gentle character which draws peoples attention and respect. He obviously deeply cares for his community and breaks the mold of a politician so convincingly that it would be a shame not to give him a try as Mayor. I think he can fulfill the role of Mayor successfully because his heart is in the right place, he knows the issues inside out, he's inclusive and respectful of others opinions and is a Hamiltonian. I don't think we should waste this opportunity to vote where our respect lies.

  18. Was that about 40 or more years ago since Baldasaro worked in heavy equipment..
    His knowledge of this particular area would best be challenged by a Certified Engineer.

    All Mr. Baldasaro's credentials, are of his own creation. Including Reverend. They are not recognized by Ontario Universities or Colleges.
    Yet, I beleive he benefits from all of these wishful thinkings..

    Running this city. I don t think he has the time or 100 percent true committment it would take.. .. With all due respect it is his plight/agenda/need for attention on his most focused purpose., marijuana and his "church".
    He has garnered much sympathy in his so called persecution of his beliefs..I say it is not his church that is persecuted it is the culture he believes in..My dad always said, you can't change the the law by breaking it... so why has be purused this assbackwards..
    It for reasons that need questioned..
    I ask Mr. Baldasaro, if you do become mayor, what will happen to the Church of the Universe? Howe will you find the time to do both?
    How will you seperate church and state? In the matters that wholly include all of Hamilton.
