Note from the Matt Jelly Campaign

Hello there,

This is a quick invite to let you know about a Candidate Meet and Greet happening tomorrow at Noon at Reardon's Deli, for Ward 2 Councillor candidate Matt Jelly. We will be making some key announcements about the hard work our campaign has been doing, and the wonderful folks who have come on board as campaign staff and advisors. We'll be outlining our platform and giving voters a good sense of our key priorities for this campaign.

Reardon's has been a part of Downtown Hamilton for 98 years and 4 generations of the Reardon family. They are located at 37 King William St in Downtown Hamilton. Everything kicks off around Noon, and Matt will be available to answer questions and interact with voters.

Matt Jelly is a resident of Ward 2 who is running for the Ward 2 seat on Hamilton City Council.  Matt Jelly is a community activist and leader who has been fighting for Ward 2 residents.  Most recently, Jelly lead the successful By-law Crawl to fight neglect and demolition of heritage buildings and the highly notable Garbage Crawl to hold owners of toxic waste responsible for its clean up.

Together Aspire. Together Achieve

  1. Welcome to the race, Matt. I've been keeping an eye out for news from your campaign.

I'm hoping you can crank up the volume and stand out from the large field of candidates in the ward.

I for one will vote for you if you can bring your ideas together and get the attention for them that they deserve. The more notice we have, the easier it will be for your supporters to get involved.

There's a time and place for everything. I think it might be your time. You have good name recognition and excellent values.

    Best of luck.

  2. As your mayoral candidate I recommend that a vote for Matt Jelly is a wasted vote .I truly believe that Matt Jelly does not have the ability to raise the image of ward two to what the voters expect . I believe that a vote for Matt Jelly is a wasted vote,I personally would find working with him unproductive for the city and hope that other candidates are seriously considered.
I would ask the voters to consider if the image of Mr.Jelly is going to be accepted by the business in that ward.
As your Mayoral candidate I want voters to know that I believe he is wrong for ward 2.

  3. Let make some things very clear,I was born in this city and I live in ward 2,and have for over 30 years and as a mayoral candidate it is my obligation to support those I believe would make the down town of our city grow leaps and bounds.I am inclined to believe that certain people running for ward 2 councilors ,would not be a attribute to the city ,has I do not think they have the ability. I support those that support the massive changes that are needed, and I feel that many do not qualify.

Many people running have no business experience and although many have great past dealings "I believe they where on off deals" I believe that the issue of are multicultural image is one of the most important ones,I know Hamilton is better off because of it.
Race of a candidate plays no role in my decision to back anyone candidate, how they present themselves does.I know that many of the candidates are my friends and friends of my family.but this alone does not make the changes that are needed for Hamilton to move forward. I know that every candidate that is running for ward 2 believes they can do the job ,I do not think this is so.Marvin Caplan is running and is a great business leader and past councilor ,but I think he should step aside for new blood.and has had his lime light. I also believe that in the better interest that needs to be given to our city as a whole, I will be attaching my support behind abdi liban as I believe in no uncertain terms he is the best candidate for ward 2. I hope that all candidates realise that it is my job to make sure that this city moves forward and that I am backing the best person, I believe for the job.

As far as ward 2 I have been thinking carefully has to my personal opion on candidates best suited ,I am of the opionion and supporting Tony Greco for ward 1.Tony has over the years shown is support for local bussineses and BIA groups .Tony will be, hands on counclour, for those people that believe that Tony may not be a green councilor I assure you that as the greenest mayoral candidate ,I will make sure that Tony reflects your concerns and mine at city hall.
"I support massive changes not just cosmetic"

Is that really Matt Jelly in the accompanying photo?
Shaved, hair brushed, shirt and tie?
I did not recognise Matt at first!
Good luck to you Matt - I hope that Ward 2 voters will vote for you in great numbers, enough for a victory.
Ward 2 would then go from a terrible councillor to someone who could represent the ward with class and integrity!

    Edward HC Graydon,

So basically what your saying is, if you don't have business experience your not worthy to run for public office. That would exclude about 90% of the population. We have governments full of business people and where has that gotten us. Business experience doesn't equate to intelligence.

What absolute arrogance. This is a democracy. Any citizen, especially one as engaged as Matt is more than worthy to serve the public. If I lived in ward 2 Matt would be high on my list of worthy candidates for my vote. You on the other hand wouldn't get a second thought.

  6. Hey Graydon - try actually talking to people in person and not leaving your biz cards on their business doorsteps before they open...

the wasted paper just from this election is staggering!

  7. Not that I would have voted for you anyway, but the fact that you think a barber would make a better public servant than someone with a Masters degree in planning and community development, shows how completely clueless you are about how to run a city. It also shows that you are completely out of touch with the people of Ward 1 if you think we would ever choose someone like tony Greco over Brian McHattie.

    Mike.....
Firstly what I got from Graydon's comment was that the Mayor is the CEO of Hamilton and knowing how to run a corporation would be better than having an expert on Physics making the choices we need to move forwards in the city !
Actually we have governments full of lawyers not businessman , and it not arrogant to say that Matt has shown by uncovering the brownfield garbage that a BYLAW ENFORCEMNT job would be more effective ! His mistrust for the politicians does not an ideal candidate make ! Hamilton in not only Just Ward 2. Simply by putting on a shirt and tie ,combing your hair does not change the person. Matt Jelly is a radical anti establismentarian! If anything Matt seems to work alone and would not be a team player in council ! Good luck in your endevours but sorry you wouldn't receive my vote !

ANONY.....McHatties idea of putting a bicycle path on Dundurn which goes no where and removes the needed parking for customers for local business only shows you what good a Masters degree in Planning and community Development produces ! As we can see from his term he has not used his education in that area of expertise while being a councillor in this ward !
If anything he has alienated the business community. Tony Greco on the other hand has been involved in the BIA for the past 28 years as well as Edward Graydon and has more sense of the problems within the ward and the city ! Locke street is business driven it has nothing to do with Planning and community development expertise ! ( We already hire so many outside consultants for that ) And where has it gotten us ? The last most successful Mayor of this city was Mayor Victor K Copps a Businessman and a Salesman and it was those qualities that made Hamilton an Ambitious City ! Principals, Plumbers apparently can't cut it in a business oriented environment ! But a Businessman who runs a Barber Shop is more in touch with the business environmnet and community than Mr. McHattie sitting behind his computer responding to constituents complaints and not understanding the needs of the successful Locke Street business Community ! BS Baffles brains and that is all we have gotten in Ward 1 for the past several years !

  11. Give me a cantankerous but honest Matt Jelly any time over a capable (read conniving) Caplan schmoozing new ideas (read new spending plans) through council. Taxpayers look for a steward of their hard earned dollars, the tax taking class looks for greasy smooth operators to keep their benefits going; as outlined by self serving anonymous posters - who will obviously be voting for themselves or their bosses. Graydon posts his kingmaking ideas, putting commercial operators ahead of ordinary people who shoulder 60% of the tax burden. Victor Veri looks to be the only mayoralty candidate who asks not where we should build a stadium but whether we should build one at all.

  12. Caplan is Di Ianni's boy, as is Tony Greco. If you like Di Ianni, then you'll love Caplan and Greco.
