That Was Easy

That was easy! Oh no it wasn't!  The Hamiltonian would like to congratulate and thank Mayor Bratina, City Council. City Staff, Citizens and all who have contributed to the resolution of the Area Rating issue.

The only reason for any type of congratulation for council on this long awaited and overdue decision is a decision, and certainly not on how they resolve the problem. The taxpayers in Ward 2, Jason Farr were gamed by the other experience councilors in rationalizing keeping status quo with taxes since the money will go to infrastructure since most infrastructure requirements are in the old city ( we will now keep track on this one). So now instead of equalizing taxes the old city taxpayers will now pay more than others for infrastructure. In my mind this logic should help Flamborough in getting their revenues back from the city in rationalizing what goes on in different areas of the city. As an example, the old city needs more infrastructure you pay more in taxes, Flamborough brings more revenues via race track betting they keep the revenues and not share with the city. Council put a happy spin on this because they are not accustomed to resolving or making decision when it comes to complex issues and that is what they celebrated. Effectively what we have a number of micro cities and rural areas with different tax rates with the old city getting the shaft.

  3. Congrats to City Manager Chris Murray for finally putting this issue to rest. As a "suburban" resident living in the third oldest community in Ontario (Ancaster) I'm not completely satisfied with the result but am glad to see the old City of Hamilton having to take care of their problems with less reliance on other municipalities. Amalgamation was about propping up the old City and funneling resources towards it and the expense of the outlying areas...........plain and simple. The old City couldn't take care of itself and needed support, unfortunately we all have to pay. In Ancaster, were paying more for less services and anything we want like sidewalk clearing which we enjoyed before amalgamation is now paid for. FYI we don't have sidewalks like the old City of Hamilton, ours are 80% along arterial roads just like the old City but we pay more for this service. We don't have litter pick up like the downtown, terrible bus service, terrible roads maintenance, terrible parks maintenance, but hey, all part of being a part of the great new City of Hamilton! Enjoy our money old Hamilton folks!

  4. I have decided after a long and hard process, up and down, to leave this City. Amalgamation was not necessary and only serves and with resentment i might add, the inner city.
Amalgamation has forced people who originally moved to the outlying areas to belong to a City they chose not to live in and now are apart of. The irony and the obvious is, most if not all the people who live in Stoney Creek, Dundas Ancaster, would never say hey I live in Hamilton. What does that tell you. Deamalgamate give these towns their identities back. Its seems to me comments I have heard from Hamiltonians living in the City is one that thinks people living in these outer areas are snobs etc etc.. so ok we would be more than happy to return to our towns, elect our own mayor and continue on as the great little towns we used to be.

  5. DUNDAS, WATERDOWN, STONEYCREEK, ANCASTER, GLANBROOK, DO NOT NEED HAMILTON.
FOR THE PAST 10 PLUS YEARS I HAVE WATCHED THESE COMMUNITIES DETERIORATE, JUST LIKE HAMILTON HAS

    GIVE US BACK OUR COMMUNITIES!!!
