John Best on Chats from the Lair

As released by Laura Babcock on Chats from the Lair

John Best loves investigative journalism – the former news director for CHCH and current Editor of The Bay Observer likes the “old school” methodical hunt for the truth. And that is exactly what he is doing with the Waterfront Trust – patiently trying to uncover what exactly is behind their large operating deficits. Is there a scandal here? I asked him some very direct questions and he answered me carefully. Listen and be the judge.

  1. I respect the questions that The Hamiltonian has asked and I like the approach that they have taken. Keep at it. But I think John Best must be more upfront about what he knows - if he knows something we do not. I don't like game playing and it does not matter who is doing it.

Obviously he knows more but like a journalist should do, you only publish when you have the proper evidence unlike other media in this town

If he is already used up all the evidence he has, I think he does not have much.

I do wonder why the 10 questions have not been answered and why councilors tried to bully this site. That is better evidence that this is worth looking into.

Not a very informative interview. Best was coy, and the interviewer incessant in her flip comments and interruptions.

I couldn't listen to the whole thing. Too many interuptions and goofing around.

It's hard to listen to any of Laura Babcock's Chats from the Lair. It reminds me of the View with Barbara Walters. Babcock continually interrupts a conversation at the time you really want to hear what the guest is going to say. Following the interruption, she gets on another topic. I don't bother with it now.

  5. In Laura's defence... Laircasts are not 'interviews'. They're extraordinarily informal, casual, often irreverent 'sessions' where it's 'no holds barred'. This is the upside: you get raw, often unexpected interludes. The downside happens when there's been a bit too much wine imbibed. I don't happen to believe the subject matter (the HWT controversy, not John Best, who I've met and been interviewed by) was well-served by the Laircast format. (Especially if you're a regular of this site and have been following Teresa's efforts on the subject.) But I'm glad that Laura has them as one of her gigs.

I'm sorry but I find no redeeming aspects in Ms Babcock character. Franky I too couldn't listen for more than 5 minutes. Formal or informal I was far from impresses with the lack of professionalism.

Not to be too harsh... Babcock`s program should be renamed the `Lame cast`

It looks like Best has absolutely nothing. This has been a witch hunt from day one!He is very coy because slander and libel laws are something he has been researching.

John has to put the cards on the table or give up on this. It is not sounding convincing so far. The only thing that is keeping this story alive now is the fact that Farr, Jackson and co. refused to answer the 10 questions.

    Just sayin

  10. I agree that Laura was far to interjectory with distractive statements - when the focus should have been on what John had to say.

However, by shooting the messenger we digress from the message he was meant to bring!!

I think he made some interesting observations/questions with regard to why and how has the fund lost monies? (specifically/forensically)

Secondly, is there cause for concern, with regard to "conflict of interest" violations; that may or may not have occurred, through-out the management of this trusted fund?

In pursuit of these truths (the taxpayers right to know) without getting a liable lawsuit levelled at you, can be a delicate dance of diplomacy and tact.

I look forward to the outcomes!!

This is bizarre. I can see how Best has to be careful not to say something that may get him in trouble. On the other hand though, The Hamiltonian has given Jason Farr, Tom Jackson, Sam Merulla, Werner Plessel and Bob Charters, all a chance to answer the 10 questions that would put much of this to rest, or, expose whatever may be lurking. So, I have to wonder why it has now been 31 days and counting without answers.

Never been a better time for Term Limits. But I have a feeling that if sites like this one continue coverage like this, the next election will be rather interesting.

Give Laura a break. At least she is pursuing this story. Yes, a little too loose for my liking as well, but it was worth listening to John Best talk about the issue.

  12. Personal opinions about Laura's style of interviewing in this Laircast aside, I'm left wondering just how much of a powder keg this whole story is. John said there is more to come, but what I've read so far and what I heard on this Laircast leaves me wondering if this isn't really just a matter of being a little fast a free with accounting, moving amounts of money around from one project to another. That's not great, but neither is it illegal nor uncommon. Even John said he is not alleging fraud. Wrist slapping perhaps, but hardly a hanging offence. If it was, we'd have a lot of managers and executives in Canada twisting in the wind.

Having said that, it still doesn't excuse the HWT employees and Trustees from poorly handling the communication on this file. They really must clear the air. The Spec story doesn't go nearly far enough in doing that.

I agree with you. I am starting to have doubts , except for the fact that the 10 questions have been largely skirted. Until they are answered, I would not rule out anything.

Why won't they answer the questions? it's not a communications failure. It's a withholding of information. Big difference.
