Tweet of the Moment
Clr. Merulla to Laura Babcock in reference to Laura tweeting John Best's piece, as featured in The Hamiltonian, in which Best says that he believes that the censuring this spring of the mayor had more to do with HWT politics than it did about a raise given to his assistant.

I don't know if I can believe Sam on this one. His over-the-top and inappropriate reaction to The Hamiltonian when asked about HWT, makes me one wonder........
ReplyDeleteSorce
what did you expect hi to say?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I don't believe the councillor for ward 4, as I don't believe any couincillor. They had it in for the mayor since he dared to ask a serious question about a publically funded organization.
DeleteGranted, the Mayor should have dropped the Raise issue. His anger got the better of him. It gave them the opening they needed.
This council is the most unimpressive group of individuals I've ever seen.
It doesn't matter who the Mayor is, if these individuals remain, we're doomed!!!
I agree with the above comments. I believe that Sam Merulla is not being truthful in his comment regarding the Mayor. When he goes "over the top", I can't understand what he is saying. He frequently can't enunciate properly.
ReplyDeleteClr. Merulla's relevance has been diminished over the years; with this twittering tweet his relevance has vanished.
ReplyDeleteI wish this councillor would stop abusing his position and thus the citizens of Hamilton. Acting in such a childish and bullying manner speaks volumes of Clr. Merulla.
Clr. Merulla, "Bob" is Mayor Bratina and I, for one, would appreciate you respect and address him as such. Not doing so, is disrespectful to us all.
Good point Serendipity!!!
ReplyDeleteYou don't like Bob Bratina, then don't vote for him.
He is the Mayor, elected by the majority of people who voted.
The position deserves the respect.
A small symptom of a bigger problem
The system we use would only work if each councillor practiced professionalism. But providing for an equal vote to each councillor, that the mayor has, while having councillor's carrying on in cliques and utilizing schoolyard behaviour, makes the system toxic.
ReplyDeleteSo, we either change the system or vote out the councillors (every single one of them, as the new ones have been contaminated), or bring in term limits.
You can bring in term limits on your own by getting people involved and talking to them about the needed purge of this council.
To make a differece, you can't be indifferent.
Term Limits Now
An update of sorts about incumbents and the such. Over the past twenty-five years, the return-rate for councillors (including pre-amalgamation entities) has been 90%. And the trend is actually on the rise.
DeleteI'm not sure what you're referring to when you suggest we 'change the system'. As for getting rid of 'every single one of them' councillors-wise, given the numbers I've just referenced, short of stupendous candidates...or, as has been rumoured on at least two fronts I'm aware of, a 'slate' of candidates running on a common platform, creating an effective 'party' in municipal politics...that's simply not going to happen. And, as I've pointed out previously, bringing in term limits requires an en masse change at the provincial level...so that's not bound to occur, either. (You may be enthused about the endeavour, but it's not an issue most Ontarians care much about.
But I agree with your penultimate point: we already have term limits, they're called 'elections'. Still, 'Vote the bums out!' is likely only to garner more...'bums'.
But I agree with your concluding point. Maybe I just interpret the notion differently. It's not just indifference at the polls that dooms us. It's indifference during the ensuing four years.
Thank God for Sam Merulla and the fact none of the posters have influence. The man has a proven track record and all you have is a anonymous bloc names creating views fueled by venom and no intelligent reflection of the man's accomplishments. Sam MerullA received nearly 90 percent of the vote and I and my family and friends stand by what we believe to be the best Councilor this city has seen.
DeleteJohn Cullen,
Proud Hamilton Resident
The tweet should have read, "John Best, stop breaking our balls" Yours Truly, Sam
ReplyDeleteI find the personal attacks against Merulla humorous and telling of the authors in that, individuals prone to cyber name calling and bullying tend to suffer from low self worth, with a twist of a defeatism syndrom. In particular, the "enaciation" issue related to Merulla. I just read John Best's verbose paronoid filled conclusion related to Bratina and his historical censure and then read Merulla's response. In doing so, it is clearly evident that Merulla dismised Best's laughable belief in a fraction of the words Best used.
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion, to quote Merulla, "what a pathetic assertion."
Sincerely,
Fran Durbin
Fran: Thank-you for reminding us all of the unprofessional rant that Merulla gave. Here is the link so that everyone can see just how inappropriate he was. http://www.thehamiltonian.net/2012/06/clr-merulla-on-hamilton-waterfront.html
DeleteEspecially when using such crude and sexist language. Keep writing Fran. We should remind everyone right up until the election .
Cheers
