Your Tax Dollars, Not at Work
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation nominated these workers for a Teddy Award, for The Worst Performance by a City Roads Crew. (see Spec story here or buy today's print version) . The tag line for the awards is "The Teddies- It's a Shame Just to be Nominated."
Despite the city being cast in so poor a light with respect to this incident, The Hamiltonian recognizes and reminds our readers that the vast majority of City Public Servants are not in that light and do a good job for our city.

The guys who sluffed off, should be blamed, but is the department head being held accountable? Does he have a performance contract?
ReplyDeleteSorce
It happens in different degrees across the world and in all kinds of employment. These guys got caught. There are plenty more who haven't and yes, plenty who work hard and do the job they are paid to do.
ReplyDeleteBut what of the supervisors and managers?
Who are they held accountable to?
How are they trained to handle confrontation?
It would be interesting to know what the procedure is, or even if there is one.
I am fortunate to have many friends that work for the City in different areas and levels...
ReplyDeleteOne of the hardworking guys was over for a visit recently and we discussed this issue ~ "Danya, you know it is bad when they hire Supervisors to supervise the Supervisors."
I cannot get that statement out of my head.
My concern is that some if not all of them will somehow get their job back ~ improper dismisal ~ lawsuit? I have seen that happen before and find it deeply disturbing.
Have a great day everyone!
Teresa and company. I would like to see you pick up on the story you did and the piece you wrote on accountability and performance.

UPDATE!
ReplyDeleteAccording to CH TV and 900 CHML 7 of the Employees WILL be RETURNING to work next week...
Thanks Danya. We have sent the City Manager a few questions about this very thing. We are advised that we will get a reply next week. We will post the Q/A at that time.

If 2-3 people were slacking off, that's one thing. But 29 people?
ReplyDeleteThat's 29 X 8 hours per day. That's 232 person hours per day that was left undetected? No one is going to believe that.
For that to happen, there had to be GROSS incompetence at a supervisory level, which eventually the GM needs to account for, or there was collusion to allow that to happen.
You can't just not notice 232 person hours EACH DAY missing (which is 1,160 person hours lost per week), without gross incompetence and/or collusion.
I hope both scenerios are being investigated, no matter how far up it goes
