Media Release: Hamilton.ca Gets New Look for International Visitors

HAMILTON, ON – November 20, 2015 – The City of Hamilton’s efforts to welcome the world took a major digital step forward recently with the implementation of an overlay page for international visitors (see attached). Visitors to Hamilton.ca from outside of Ontario will see a ‘pop up’ that welcomes the visitor and asks if they are interested in Moving to Hamilton, Doing Business in Hamilton, or Visiting Hamilton.

Once a choice is made, the user will be taken to intermediate welcome pages featuring the most searched tasks/items from which they can go on to connect with the City’s main website. As well, translation options are featured on each page.

“The City’s website attracts many international visitors, but until now we have not had good metrics

on what they were looking for, nor whether they found it,” said Sarah Wayland, Project Lead for the City of Hamilton’s Global Hamilton Office. “It is our focus now to ensure international visitors have a much more streamlined and accurate experience using the website.”

In addition to helping international and out-of-province visitors navigate the City of Hamilton’s website, the overlay page also captures relevant information about the audience segmentation of overseas visitors. This information is invaluable for building strategies for future online tools and features, and it will also inform relevant City program sections about areas of opportunity to attract newcomers.

“Throughout its history, Hamilton has been a welcoming community for immigrants – we’re now continuing that tradition by using the latest technological features available to us,” said City of Hamilton City Manager Chris Murray. “The information superhighway now has a strong off-ramp to Hamilton for those looking for new work, live, and play opportunities in Canada.”

Global Hamilton is an initiative of the City’s Economic Development Division that works to attract and support economic class immigrants, immigrant entrepreneurs, and international students to the City of Hamilton.

Hamilton's Economic Development Office is the central point of contact for business assistance. Its services are geared to serve new start-up companies, corporate relocations, and the expansion and retention of existing business. Its mission is to serve as the catalyst for continued economic growth, job creation, and revitalization in Hamilton.
