The Hamiltonian Poll Featured on Talk Radio Stations

The good people at 900 CHML and 820 Talk both featured the poll results on air. Bill Kelly featured it this morning and invited listener feedback and Mike Nabuurs featured it as well.  I did not catch the 820 piece. The CHML piece seemed to suggest that the poll results were consistent with the sentiments out there. I think it behooves the Mayor and council to not take a defensive posture, but to see this as a need for positive change. I'm a fair person and, as mentioned, anyone on council is invited to state their views on this blog; defensive or otherwise.

So far, 81% of people polled on The Hamiltonian believe that it is appropriate for our local councillors to engage with citizens on blogs.

Thanks to the good people at 900 CHML and 820 Talk.!

Councillors in this city, generally speaking, are not capable of "blogging" and I would venture to say that at least a few of them would not even know what the word really means. That, plus the council's insular, self-congratulatory, and defensive culture equals the view that this political body is very, very out of touch with the way things are changing in terms of communication in the wards and the city generally. This site, and others on municipal affairs, increased municipal affairs focus by traditional media outlets, the growing number of independent and/or ethnic press publications, and the rise of citizen advocacy groups, such as the Hamilton Civic League, are all indicators that the present way of conducting city business by municipal politicians is changing at a quick rate. There is a palpable dissatisfaction with the dinosaurs who have been doing the same old, same old for a decade, or more, on council -in one case since 1988!
Just as an aside, the city internet portal, www.myhamilton.ca, which includes the city hall portion, was extremely expensive to establish and is costly to maintain - and is, in many ways an abject failure, particularly in terms of providing a venue for ratepayers to learn about, and comment on, Hamilton civic issues.

  2. Henly is right. They are out of touch. If they can't face citizens online, that tells you soemthing about their nature. time to clean house
