Eisenberger Vs. Trump Round 1
Rather than focus on the President's comments regarding NAFTA, Mayor Eisenberger takes a broad swipe at Trump's presidency. While there is no doubt that Mr. Trump and his presidency is rich in controversy, it is questionable whether the Mayor's swipe was a smart or appropriate thing to do.
What is your view? Do you think Mayor Eisenberger's comments were appropriate and called for? Do you believe the tweet will be noticed and responded to by Mr. Trump?

What possible benefit do ratepayers in the City of Hamilton gain from this sort of pandering?
ReplyDeleteI believe Mr. Eisenberger's personal opinion's on politicians from other Countries are best left in private discussion, and not afforded some misplaced "official" status when released on Municipal social media.
There are now several members of City Council who use Municipal social media to manipulate personal agenda.
The practice is embarrassing, lacks professionalism, and should be discontinued until a revised formal policy is developed.
Green, Merulla, Collins, Skelly, Whitehead, Partridge have all run their mouths on Facebook or Twitter. Or pushed a personal agenda on blogs, which are also a form of social media.

This will likely be invisible to the Trump administration. But I think the mayor should have kept his personal; views to himself While NAFTA is being talked about,I'm sure our Federal government doesn't need Mayors complicating things.
ReplyDeleteJust sayin
I don't think this was proper. It shows a misalignment with the Feds, it shows a disregard for public office, and it puts forth a position that may or may not represent the Hamilton position.

I am not a Trump fan by no means, but it is kinda silly to pick a fight with the most powerful man in the world.
ReplyDeleteThink it through. Lucky Trump's not listening.

It is quite incomprehensible to me why any mayor, US or Canadian would seek to comment on the US president in this manner. Whatever Trump may be, say or do, he is the duly and democratically elected president of the United States, a country that in most respects is our most important ally and certainly neighbour. Would Mayor Eisenberger also be commenting on North Korea's or many of the African dictators who hold power on far more dubious terms. This type of commentary is what makes Hamilton council seem like a bunch of light-weights. Once they figure out how to manage the city more effectively and efficiently, perhaps then they could take on the province before trying to 'fix' the United States.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mr. VdV. I am not sure what the point of his comment was, but surely he should not be using his position as mayor to comment on his personal poltical views. It just makes us look stupid.
DeleteAwestruck
I don't understand the reason for Mayor Eisenberger's comment viz Mr. Trump. Especially since the NAFTA agreement is being renegotiated.
DeleteThis smells lie someone wanting to create an international profile.

Incredibly bad idea to weigh in on partisan politics that you aren't a part of. The city has no influence in international politics and if they do its with Canadian officials

It was hare brained and highly inappropriate to mouth off like that. He is Lord Mayor of Hamilton not of the world! He should pontificate on local issues, such as the need for dog walkers to use poop scoops to avoid the many slips and falls the city is being sued for, and the need to remove lint to avoid dryer fires which is something he is personally well qualified to speak about. Those are just some examples where the Mayor could show some leadership on. If I were the Prime Minster I'd kick some butt during the visit to the Winona Peach Festival and say something like: Hey Fred Flingstones, it just ain't peachy to speak about POTUS like that. Not when I'm negotiating NAFTA. Too many jobs in Hamilton and the rest of the country depend on a good trade deal.
ReplyDelete"Municipalities today are much more aggressive and need to be" said Mayor Eisenberger, "can't necessarily wait for the National government to do a junket to a Country of it's choice, or for the Provincial government, although we participate in those as well"
ReplyDeleteI am wondering if "the Hamiltonian" would be interested in pursuing what cost (if any) were borne directly by Municipal taxpayers for this "junket" and inquire as to when we can expect a detailed report on direct, provable, outcomes?
Thank-you.

I don't think that's a worthwhile pursuit. The Mayor has not been known to be reckless in this respect. Of course the trip will cost money and of course he should report on what was accomplished, but he shouldn't be put on trial for it.
DeleteJust saying...
this is the Mayor's second trip to the area on our behalf, and he has also sent Councilor Green in his place to attend a conference.
DeleteSince you are in the know, how much did those trips cost us? And perhaps you would be kind enough to provide a link detailing the benefits we have accrued as a result of these expenditures to date?
Accountability and transparency?
