Before the Ballot - with Ward 9 Candidate Abhijeet Gill

Welcome to this instalment of Before the Ballot featuring Ward 9 Candidate Abhijeet Gill.

What motivated you to run for council, and why do you believe now is the right time for new leadership in your ward?

The core reason why I chose to run for council is because I genuinely care about the future of the community and I believe the residents of ward 9 deserve leadership that is present, responsive and focused on practical results. I have been a resident of ward 9 for over a decade, and over the last several years through my work in real estate and speaking with the residents across the ward, I have had the opportunity to hear firsthand about the frustrations residents are facing. Issues such as affordability, concerns with infrastructure, traffic and road safety, development pressures, public health and safety concerns, and the feeling that residents are not being heard at City Hall.

I have a core belief that if we are a part of a community, we should strive to leave it better than we found it. Public service is about creating a positive change for our community for people present now and into the future.

Our community is changing rapidly and with rapid change come new challenges that require fresh energy and perspectives, new ideas, and a collaborative approach. Residents want someone who is present, accessible, willing to listen, and who is focused on long term solutions for all of Ward 9.

I’m not running because I think one person has all the answers. I’m running because I care deeply about this community, will be a strong voice for Ward 9 residents, and believe in bringing people together to move our city forward in a positive and practical way

Every ward has its own unique challenges. What do you believe are the top three issues facing residents in your ward today, and how would you address them?

Ward 9 is a growing and diverse community and the reality is there are more than just three issues facing residents today. However, the concerns around affordability, infrastructure and traffic, responsible growth, community safety and environmental accountability continue to remain top of mind for residents whom I have had the pleasure of speaking with so far.

Affordability continues to impact families, seniors and young people across the Ward through rising housing costs, property taxes, and the overall cost of living. While municipalities alone cannot solve the affordability issues we are facing, I believe the members of City Council have a responsibility to make financially responsible decisions, be more transparent with spending and the services procured, support a range of housing options and ensure residents are receiving value for the services that they are paying.

Infrastructure and traffic are also major concerns. As our Ward continues to develop, residents want safer roads, roads that are not falling apart, better traffic flow, reliable transit, and infrastructure planning that ensures the City keeps up with the growth we are seeing. Too often, growth happens faster than infrastructure improvements. I would advocate for and ensure proactive planning, stronger investment into roads and public infrastructure, and ensuring Ward 9 receives its fair share of attention and resources.

Community safety is another important issue that residents care deeply about. Whether its concerns around crime, speeding, unsafe intersections or overall neighbourhood safety, people want to feel secure where they live and raise their families. I believe safety starts with strong community relationships, proactive planning, and ensuring residents' concerns are being taken seriously while working collaboratively with city departments and partners, emergency services, and community organizations.

Finally, the odour concerns from the GFL landfill are something that cannot be ignored. I’m personally impacted by this issue myself, so I understand the frustration residents feel firsthand. Beyond the smell itself, residents are also concerned about pollution, overall air quality and the long term impacts of pollutants in the air. I recognize that efforts have already been made by the current City Council and the incumbent, residents, and community advocacy groups to bring attention to the landfill concerns, and I believe it’s important that those efforts continue collaboratively. I believe we need stronger accountability, better communication and a collaborative approach involving the residents, the city, the province, and environmental agencies to work toward practical long term solutions that reduce the impact and do not just defer the issue.

Ultimately leadership starts with listening, staying accessible and approaching issues proactively rather than reactively.

Municipal government often requires balancing competing interests and difficult budget decisions. How would you approach making tough decisions at City Hall?

I understand the municipal government is about balancing many different perspectives, priorities and financial realities and I believe tough decisions should always be approached with transparency, accountability, deep analysis of situations and a long term mindset.

My approach would always begin with listening. I want to be a strong bridge between Ward 9 residents and city hall, ensuring people feel heard, informed and properly represented when decisions are being made. It’s important to hear from residents, local businesses, city staff and community stakeholders before making a decision that impacts people's lives. Even when there are competing viewpoints, people deserve open communication and honesty throughout the process.

I also believe research and depth of understanding are critical. Before making major decisions, I believe any elected official should take time to fully understand the issue, review the data, listen to experts and residents and consider the short-term and long-term impacts. Good decision making comes from being prepared and a willingness to look at issues from multiple perspectives.

At the same time, I recognize that not every decision will make everyone happy. Public service sometimes means making difficult choices while being honest about the reasoning behind them and remaining accountable afterwards.

Through both my business background and experience in real estate, I’ve developed an understanding of budgeting, financial responsibility, negotiations, and long-term planning. I understand the importance of balancing priorities, making practical decisions, and recognizing that every dollar spent at City Hall ultimately comes from taxpayers. That perspective has taught me the importance of being thoughtful, balanced, financially responsible, and solution-oriented when approaching difficult decisions.

Most importantly, I would approach every decision with the mindset that we should leave our community better than we found it. That means making thoughtful decisions today that will impact Ward 9 and the families and people that live here for the years to come.

What experience, skills, or perspective do you bring that distinguishes you from other candidates seeking the same council seat?

I believe I bring a combination of professional experience, education, community perspective and a proactive approach to leadership that allows me to connect with residents of many different backgrounds and age groups.

Professionally, my experience in real estate has given me a strong understanding of housing, development, budgeting and the real challenges residents face when it comes to affordability and growth. Through my work, I have spent years working directly with families, seniors, first-time buyers, tenants and local business owners, which has given me firsthand insight into many of the issues affecting our community today.

Academically, I hold a Commerce degree from McMaster University. My educational background, in addition to my business work, has helped ensure a strong understanding of financial planning, budgeting, economics and strategic decision making. It has also taught me the importance of balancing priorities and understanding budgets responsibly. Furthermore, it has also equipped me to make difficult decisions with long-term and short-term impacts in mind.

What also distinguishes me is my mindset towards the role of the City Council. I believe effective leadership should be proactive and not just reactive. Too often in municipal politics, issues are only addressed once they become major problems. I believe in staying engaged with residents consistently, identifying concerns early and working collaboratively toward practical solutions before issues become larger. Whether it is infrastructure, traffic, development or environmental concerns, I believe communication, preparation and long-term thinking are critical.

I also place a strong emphasis on accessibility and transparency. Residents deserve a councillor who is approachable, responsive and actively involved in the community. Someone who keeps people informed and makes sure their voices are a part of the decision making process.

I believe I also bring a fresh perspective and energy at a time where many residents are looking for new ideas and a more engaged approach to the role of their Councillor. I am someone who values research and understanding issues in depth before making decisions because residents deserve someone focused on results rather than politics.

Most importantly, I genuinely care about the future of the community. I have a core belief that we are part of a community, we should strive to make a positive impact and that mindset is what motivates me to step forward and serve.

What is the best way for voters to contact you and/or learn more about you?

The best way for residents to contact me and learn more about my campaign will be through my website and social media platforms.

My campaign website will officially be going live on May 29th, where residents will be able to learn more about my platform, priorities, upcoming events, and ways to get involved.
