Before the Ballot- with Ward 2 Councillor Candidate Tony Sciara

Welcome to this edition of Before the Ballot- with Ward 2 Councillor Candidate Tony Sciara.

What motivated you to run for council, and why do you believe now is the right time for new leadership in your ward?

Hamilton’s best days are still ahead—and I’m running for City Council because I believe we have a unique opportunity to shape that future together. Born and raised in Hamilton, I have built my life and career here, and this city is more than my hometown—it is a community I deeply care about and believe in. I have always been passionate about Hamilton’s growth and potential. With our hardworking people, strong community spirit, and unique geographic advantages, I believe Hamilton can be one of Canada’s great cities.

As a lifelong entrepreneur and engaged citizen, I have seen both the opportunities before us and the challenges holding us back. With strong leadership, a clear vision, and a focus on residents’ priorities, I believe we can achieve far more.
That is why I am running for City Council. I want to help build a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Hamilton—one that supports local businesses, creates opportunities for families, and inspires pride in our community. I believe now is the time for leadership that listens, collaborates, and delivers results for the people of Hamilton.

Every ward has its own unique challenges. What do you believe are the top three issues facing residents in your ward today, and how would you address them?

As a resident of Ward 2, I have spent a great deal of time speaking with neighbors, business owners, and community members. What I have found is that their concerns are my concerns. The three issues I hear about most often are homelessness and encampments, community safety, and the struggles facing many local businesses.

First, we must address homelessness with both compassion and accountability. We need to work closely with community organizations, social service agencies, healthcare providers, and all levels of government to ensure people have access to the support and housing they need, while also maintaining safe, clean, and accessible public spaces for everyone.

Second, residents deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods. Public safety is a fundamental responsibility of government. I will advocate for stronger collaboration between the city, Hamilton Police, community organizations, and residents to address crime, improve neighborhood safety, and ensure our streets, parks, and public spaces are welcoming for families, seniors, and visitors alike.

Third, our local businesses need support. Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, yet many are struggling. I will champion policies that encourage investment, reduce unnecessary barriers, and create an environment where businesses can thrive. That includes exploring targeted incentives, streamlining processes where possible, and actively promoting Hamilton as a destination for new investment and job creation.

Before we can attract new investment and growth, we must first address the challenges that residents see every day. By improving safety, addressing homelessness, and creating a stronger business environment, we can restore confidence in Ward 2 and build a community that residents are proud of.

Municipal government often requires balancing competing interests and difficult budget decisions. How would you approach making tough decisions at City Hall?

Municipal government is about making decisions that have a direct impact on people’s daily lives. Whether it’s public safety, infrastructure, housing, parks, or city services, every decision must be made with the best interests of residents in mind.

When faced with difficult decisions at City Hall, I would begin by listening. I believe residents, business owners, community organizations, and subject matter experts all have valuable perspectives that deserve to be heard. Good decisions come from understanding the facts, considering the long-term impact, and being open to different viewpoints.

As a lifelong entrepreneur, I understand the importance of responsible budgeting and accountability. Every tax dollar represents money that residents and businesses have worked hard to earn. I will carefully evaluate spending, prioritize essential services, and ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used efficiently and effectively. There will be times when competing interests make decisions challenging. In those situations, I will focus on what delivers the greatest overall benefit to the community while remaining fair, transparent, and accountable. Even when residents may not agree with every decision, they deserve to know that those decisions were made thoughtfully, honestly, and with the community’s best interests at heart. My approach is simple: listen carefully, study the facts, respect taxpayers, and make decisions based on what will strengthen Hamilton today and for future generations.

What experience, skills, or perspective do you bring that distinguishes you from other candidates seeking the same council seat?

What distinguishes me from many other candidates is the combination of my business experience, community connections, and proven ability to work with people from all walks of life.

As a lifelong entrepreneur and businessman, I understand the challenges of managing budgets, creating opportunities, solving problems, and making difficult decisions. In business, success requires accountability, sound judgment, and the ability to deliver results—qualities I will bring to City Hall.

My career in the entertainment industry has also provided me with unique experiences and relationships that have allowed me to work with a wide range of individuals, organizations, and community leaders. It has taught me the importance of communication, collaboration, and bringing people together around a common goal. Perhaps most importantly, I bring a deep love for Hamilton and a genuine commitment to its future. I was born and raised here, and I care deeply about the success of our city and the well-being of its residents.

I am determined, patient, and practical in my approach to leadership. I believe in listening before acting, building consensus where possible, and making thoughtful, prudent decisions that serve the best interests of taxpayers and the community as a whole. At a time when many residents feel frustrated and unheard, I offer a fresh perspective, real-world experience, and a commitment to putting the people of Ward 2 first. My goal is not simply to hold office—it is to help restore confidence in local government and contribute to building a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Hamilton.
